Obituary for Mary Josephine Carr

Mary Josephine Copeland Carr, 92, of Weatherford passed away Thursday November 23, 2017. A memorial visitation will be held from 11 a.m., to 1p.m, Monday, November 27, 2017 in the High School Room at North Side Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to North Side Baptist building fund or your favorite charity. Mary was born to Belton and Dannie (Warden) Copeland on February 26, 1925 in Weatherford, TX. She started working at the age of 12 doing dishes for a neighbor. As a teenager she worked at Sharp’s Grocery and in a dentist office. At the age of 16 she met her future husband, Alvin Carr, on a blind date. Mary and Alvin were married September 7, 1941. Three days later they left for California. In 1943 Mary and Alvin returned to Weatherford where Alvin was drafted into WWII. Mary and Alvin celebrated 57 years of marriage. Mary worked for Montgomery Ward Catalog Store in Weatherford as Manager. In 1959 she went to Isbell’s Beauty College. She had her own beauty shop in Weatherford for over 15 years before retiring to care for elderly parents. Mary had a passion for children, especially teenagers. Her children’s friends were always welcome. She allowed the neighbor girls to use her beauty shop to learn how to care for their nails and hair. The only requirement she had was that they clean the shop afterward. They always did what was expected. She was also always willing to help a teen in need. Many teens came through her home, some staying months or longer. She loved each and every one of them. Mary and Alvin loved to travel. They visited at least 30 of the 50 states as well as Mexico and Canada. After Mary retired she volunteered at Weatherford Health Care teaching ceramics and other crafts. She also taught ceramics to her friends. She worked part time at Tony’s Grocery on Rusk St. Mary loved working for Tony Priest and his family and seeing all her north side friends. Mary was a lifelong member of North Side Baptist Church, where six generations of her family attended. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin; parents, Belton and Dannie Copeland; in-laws, Ridley and Irene Carr; brother, Richard Copeland and sister, Linda Chalsma of Arkansas; sister, Flora Shaw of Weatherford; brother and sister-in-law, Aven and Jackie Carr of Lewisville.
She is survived by her son and his wife, Henry (Butch) and Pat Carr; daughter and her husband, Janice and Benny Robertson all of Weatherford; grandchildren, Wayne (Beth) Roberson, Missy Sargent, Kim (Jerry) Watson, Jeff (Amy) Carr all of Weatherford, Platt Robertson of Las Vegas, NV and Jennifer (Mark) Barsalou of Fort Worth; great grandchildren, Lauren (Nathan) Swaim, Emerson (Hannah) Roberson, Libby McNiel and fiancé Cole Miller, Chelsea (Ben) Bryant, Kendall Watson, Kyle and Kody Sargent all of Weatherford and Rowdy (Robin) Sargent of Georgia; great great grandchildren, Bentley and Lochlyn Swaim; brothers-in-law, Roy Shaw of Weatherford and Jim Chalsma of New Mexico; several nieces, nephews and many “adopted” children.
