Sergeant Willis Franklin McNiel gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to his country on Saturday, December 2, 1950, during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir in North Korea. He was just 20 years old.

Willis was born on July 19, 1930, in Chico, Texas, to Willis Franklin McNiel, Sr. and Maudie (Dudley) McNiel. He was raised in Weatherford, where he attended the Baptist church, enjoyed riding horses, and treasured the companionship of family and friends. Those who knew him remember a young man whose love for home was matched only by his devotion to serving his country.

Answering the call to duty, Willis faithfully served in the United States Army during the Korean War. At a time when freedom demanded extraordinary courage, he willingly stood in its defense. During the fierce fighting at the Chosin Reservoir, one of the most grueling and historic battles of the Korean War, Sergeant McNiel made the ultimate sacrifice. Though his life was cut tragically short, his legacy of honor and courage has endured for generations.

For more than seven decades, his sacrifice has remained a lasting reminder that the freedoms enjoyed today have come at an immeasurable cost. Sergeant McNiel's return home is not simply the closing of a chapter in history, but the fulfillment of a promise that America's fallen heroes are never forgotten. His family, friends, and community now have the opportunity to honor him with the dignity and gratitude he so deeply deserves.

Willis is survived by his nieces and nephews, Connie Bunn, Carlotta Parsons, Michael Crain, and Gary Crain; numerous other relatives and friends; and his special friend and Army buddy, Mr. Jimmy Roden of Weatherford, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willis Franklin McNiel, Sr. and Maudie McNiel; his brothers, Coy McNiel, Sr., Pat McNiel, and Norbert McNiel; and his sisters, Callie McNiel Martin and Faye McNiel Crain Parish.
