W.L. "Shorty" Hawkins

October 14, 1918 — July 15, 2006

  W. L. “Shorty” Hawkins, 87, of Weatherford, died Saturday, July 15, 2006, at his residence. Born October 14, 1918, in Seymour, Texas, he was a resident of Weatherford for many years. Shorty was retired owner of Hawkins House Moving, a Veteran of the Army Air Force, the past Commander of the American Legion, and a member of the VFW. He loved his family and his grandchildren. 

  Shorty was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Hawkins; two sons, Jim and Leroy Hawkins; and a grandson, Thomas David Hawkins. 

  He is survived by his daughters, Kay Hightower of Weatherford, Cheryl “Susie” Bailey and husband, David of Weatherford, and Karen Bailey and husband, Harvey of Weatherford; son, Winston “Winky” Hawkins and wife, Shirley of Weatherford; sister, Dorothy Hitt and husband, Gordon of Ardmore, Oklahoma; special friend and companion, Yvonne “Little Red” Vernon of Weatherford; 33 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren, and 20 great great grandchildren.       

Funeral service: 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 18, 2006, in the North Side Baptist Church, with Rev. Sonny Buckingham officiating. 

Interment: East Greenwood Cemetery. 

Visitation: 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, in the Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel
