Roderick “Roddy” T. Coquat, age 71, passed from this life on Monday, September 15, 2025. He was born on July 26, 1954 in Three Rivers, Texas, to James and Madge (Carroll) Coquat.
Roddy lived a life of grit, service, and faith. A professional cowboy and proud PRCA member, he carried the spirit of the rodeo with him wherever he went. When he was called, he judged for the Pro Rodeo Cowboy Association.
Roddy also devoted himself to protecting others as a firefighter and EMT, later sharing his knowledge as an instructor at Weatherford College Fire Academy. Even after retirement, Roddy continued to return as a guest lecturer, investing in the next generation of first responders.
His drive for challenge and endurance was evident in his participation in the annual 9/11 Staircase Challenge, which he faithfully completed until 2023. Always eager to try something new, he even traveled to Costa Rica in 2015 to learn to surf. While there, he developed a working relationship with the local responders. Whenever he returned to Costa Rica, he brought with him supplies that he shared, teaching them different methods of responding to emergencies.
Early in Roddy’s life, he developed a talent for drawing. Roddy would draw what he knew, rodeo life and his devoted dogs. He would spend much time with his neighbor and life friend, Roger Langford, discussing drawings and how to improve his talent.
Above all, Roddy’s Christian faith was central to his life. He especially cherished listening to the podcast and Sunday services of his fellow cowboy competitor, Andy Taylor.
Roddy was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jan Coquat, and by his parents, James and Madge Coquat.
He is survived by his sister, Angelique Zamzow and husband, Arlen; brother, Jean Pierre Coquat and brother, Michael “Happy” Coquat, and wife, Nancy; nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; many cousins; along with his faithful mule, Rio, and favorite cow dog, Pica.
