Ray was a quiet and exemplary family man, enormously proud of his children, grandchildren and particularly his great-grandchildren. He was a genuine friend to many and a devoted servant of God.
Born in Fort Worth, Ray graduated from Northside High School. He married the love of his life, Barbara Jo White, on June 28, 1957, and shortly thereafter, they relocated to east Fort Worth. He served in the Army National Guard for eight years. Texas Electric Service Company employed him for 37 years and retired in 1992.
In his twenties, Ray began his tenure as a Deacon, serving at Flamingo Road Church of Christ and Handley Church of Christ. Additionally, he volunteered with the Christmas Wish Project for over 25 years, leading the annual bicycle-building initiatives. Thousands of foster children residing in and around Tarrant County community benefited from this endeavor every Christmas. He served the City of Fort Worth on the Board of Adjustments, the Zoning Board, the Golf Advisory Board and then on the Grand Jury for Tarrant County.
Ray was an avid Fort Worth history buff and devoted admirer of Louis L’Amour Western literary works. An outdoor enthusiast, he enjoyed boating, snow skiing, golf, and fishing. Annually he took his young family on snow skiing excursions in New Mexico, and later to Colorado as they grew older. As a golf enthusiast, he moved in proximity to a golf course, allowing him the opportunity to play at his pleasure. With his leisure time and a fishing pole in hand, Ray could indulge in his passion for catching fish. Additionally, he was a skilled woodworker, crafting musical instruments, tables, and gavels. Ray also collected artifacts, especially those depicting history. As an artist, he found joy in sketching portraits of individuals.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Herman Edward and Margaret Levenia Ferrell; and brothers, Jack, Herman, Hugh, and Richard Ferrell; and his great granddaughter, Ashlynn Kay.
Ray is survived by his wife, Barbara Jo Ferrell; their three children and their spouses, Raymond Lee Ferrell, Jr. (Cindy), Dee Ann Crawford (Jimmy), and Randall Ferrell (Kathy).
