Patricia Freter

  Longtime resident of Yucca Valley, California, Patricia Freter passed away August 15, 2026, in Mineral Wells, Texas.

  Born in Iowa in 1931, Pat was raised in Cedar Rapids where she met and married artist Fred Spratt. They welcomed three children before moving to San Jose, California in 1954 for Fred to complete his graduate studies and join SJSU faculty. The family spent memorable sabbaticals in England and Mexico. They later divorced and in 1972, Pat met the love of her life, John Freter. They married in 1974 and shortly thereafter moved to Southern California where Pat worked as a national account executive for a marketing research firm, traveling extensively across the US.

  With the opportunity to relocate to the desert in 1984, Pat and John made their home in Yucca Valley for nearly 40 years, relishing its natural beauty and their many friends. A talented artist in her own right, Pat decorated numerous gourds honoring Native American themes.

  John passed away in 2021 and the following year, Pat relocated to Texas to be with her daughter Kris Hemler. In addition to Kris, Pat is survived by sons Mike Spratt, Shahn Spratt; stepchildren Todd Freter and Dana Davies; and grandchildren Sean, Ashley, Richard, Trevor, Brendan, Meara and Colin; and four great-grandchildren.

  Pat, kind and thoughtful, presented a modest demeanor that belied a memorably sly sense of humor, keen intelligence, and tender heart. Her memory is lovingly cherished by those lucky enough to have known her.
