Nancy Jo Owen, affectionately known as “Mama O,” passed from this earthly life to her heavenly home on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at the age of 82. Nancy was born on March 2, 1943, in Weatherford, Texas, to Herschel and Viola (Scherer) Walker. Nancy married Kenneth Dale Owen on September 7, 1968 at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Weatherford, Texas. Ken and Nancy recently celebrated 57 years of marriage surrounded by their children and grandchildren.
As a child, Nancy accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Weatherford. She graduated from the University of North Texas (formerly North Texas State University) with a bachelor’s degree in education. She later earned a master’s degree in education as well. She taught school for 33 years, starting in Mineral Wells, and later in the school districts of McKinney, Denton, Breckenridge and her last 25 years of teaching in Lake Dallas, teaching Texas History which she loved. Countless are the number of students and fellow teachers alike that she positively impacted throughout her long teaching career. While living in Denton, Texas, Nancy was an active member of Southmont Baptist Church where she was a strong advocate for the Great Commission. Nancy also taught youth Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and was a 4-H sponsor and a cheerleading squad sponsor, in addition to pouring into the lives of her two beloved sons, Craig and Keith, of whom she was so very proud. Following her retirement, Ken and Nancy built a home outside of Weatherford on Nancy’s family land where Ken and Nancy lived the last 21 years. Nancy was an active member of the Grace Class of North Side Baptist Church in Weatherford where she continued ministering to others. Nancy enjoyed arts and crafts and trips to Canton. She was an avid sports fan (football, baseball, women’s basketball, tennis), especially any team related to her grandchildren. She loved sunflowers, hummingbirds, cardinals, wildlife, and reading her Bible and devotionals. Nancy’s greatest joy came from spending time with her family. The greatest joy of the later years of Nancy’s life was her involvement in the lives of her grandchildren, attending as many of their events as possible with Ken and hearing as much as she could about each of their lives. Nancy cherished her family.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Herschel and Viola Walker. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Kenneth Owen of Weatherford, Texas, who loved her so much; and her two sons: Craig Owen and daughter-in-law, Susan (Sanborn) Owen and Keith Owen and daughter-in-law, Rebecca (Petty) Owen of San Saba, Texas; along with her four treasured grandchildren – two grandsons, Jacob Owen of Jacksonville, Texas, and Jonathan Owen and wife, Madi (Bynum) Owen of College Station, Texas, and two granddaughters, Abigail Owen of Arlington, Texas, and Samantha Owen of College Station, Texas. She is also survived by her sister, Martha (Marty) Rogers of Stephenville, Texas, and her brother, Alfred (Sonny) Walker and sister-in-law, LaDonna of Paradise, Texas, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and other extended family. She is also survived by her wonderful friends of the Grace Class at North Side Baptist Church in Weatherford who have faithfully prayed, texted, called, brought food, and sent encouraging Scriptures and cards. Without their support, this journey would have been much more difficult.
Nancy recently reflected that sometimes difficult times prove that we all need to lean on Christ for the love He can provide and His strength to carry on. Through it all, she remained positive pointing others to God’s mercy and grace. Nancy fought her battle with ovarian cancer for the last three years, just to start another battle with aggressive breast cancer in recent months. In her words, she “didn’t win these last battles, but in losing comes the Victory in Jesus.” Through all her trials and tribulations, she told everyone everywhere that she was in God’s hands.
Those who knew Nancy will remember her as a woman of faith with a deep devotion to her family and a vibrant, engaging personality – a legacy that will live on through the lives she touched and the love she shared. Nancy will be missed by all who knew her.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Solaris Hospice Care for the compassion and care shown to Nancy and the whole family during this season and also to Dr. Noelle Cloven, Dr. Chi Pham, and Dr. Nusrat Khan, and their nursing staffs for their care and help during this journey as well. The family also wants to express their great appreciation to the Grace Class of North Side Baptist Church of Weatherford, Texas who have provided encouragement, strength, and comfort to Nancy and Ken and the whole family. What a group of faithful prayer warriors!
