Merle G. Cornish

  Merle G. Cornish, 76, of Weatherford, Texas, passed away on Monday, August 24, 2026.

  Merle was born August 12, 1950, in Logan, Utah, to Dallas and Sybil Goodey. She grew up working alongside her family on their farm before going on to build a full and generous life of her own in Texas.

  On April 18, 1973, she married Alan Bennett Cornish, a police officer she met in Arlington, while working together at Dallas Methodist Hospital. Together, they had three daughters: Marlene, Allison and Ashley. The couple made their home in Arlington before moving to Weatherford in 1980. Alan preceded her in death in 2009.

  Merle spent her career caring for others and for her community. She started her career at 19 years of age working for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints before moving to Grand Prairie, Texas, where she met her husband. She drove a school bus for Peaster and Weatherford ISD, where generations of students fondly knew her as "Mrs. C." She and Alan also owned and operated Skateland North skating rink, and Merle worked for 32 years at Campbell Hospital (now Medical City) before retiring.

  A lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Merle held a strong testimony of the gospel and served for many years as a Primary teacher. She was known for her warmth, her humor, and never meeting a stranger, as well as her devoted love of sports- cheering enthusiastically for the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, Dallas Mavericks, and Utah Jazz. Those who knew her also remember her love of the color purple, an ever-present Coke in hand, and her favorite treats, Milky Way and 3 Musketeers bars.

  Merle is survived by her daughters, Marlene Noland, Allison Sprayberry, and Ashley Cornish; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Aylah, Jason, Lilly, Hayden, and Kingston; and her siblings, Myrna DeGriselles, Jane Sparks, and Garth Goodey and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alan Cornish; her parents, Dallas and Sybil Goodey and her sisters, Karen Kent, MaryAnne Gardner, and Rhonda Goodey.

  Visitation and Funeral: Friday, September 4, 2026, 1:00–2:00 p.m. and 2:30-4:00 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Weatherford, Texas: 2251 Bethel Road Weatherford, TX 76087.

  Burial: Tuesday, September 8, 2026, 11:00 a.m., DFW National Cemetery.
