Lanel Shires

July 21, 1950 — January 13, 2024

LaNel Shires passed away peacefully in her home on January 13, 2024, surrounded by family. LaNel was born to John and Christine Thouvenel on July 21, 1950, in Muskogee, Oklahoma. She and her twin sister, Janel, were the youngest of six siblings.

LaNel attended Belton High School in Belton, Texas and after advanced on to “beauty school” as she so often referred to it, in Weatherford, Texas. Upon graduation LaNel became an owner of and operator in several beauty shops throughout Parker County. If you’ve ever grown up in a salon, you know the people you meet and the relationships you form are ones that last a lifetime, and LaNel’s salon relationships did just that. It wasn’t just a place of employment, but a home to many. A home to laugh, to cry, to share stories and most importantly, a place for people to leave feeling more beautiful than when they walked in.

On October 14, 1981, LaNel married her “Honey” Zack Shires and together they commenced forth in the building of Zack’s business; Zack’s Nursery located at 140 Olive Branch Rd in Brock, Texas. It was there they built a beautiful life together. They were blessed to spend many amazing years at 140 Olive Branch. They worked together, raised a family together, built a community together and most importantly, showed us what true love looks like, and that you’re always stronger together.

If you knew LaNel well, you knew that she loved fiercely, she was outspoken, and you always knew where you stood with her. Her generosity was unmatched, and she shared it with many. LaNel wore many hats throughout the years, but her favorite was “Granny”, and she wore it well. She not only loved and spoiled her grandchildren, but always made sure that when they were at Granny & PawPaw’s they were well fed, snug in a warm blanket, and undoubtedly living their best life.

If you take one thing from LaNel, take the love and loyalty she shared for her family. She is now reunited with her “Honey” on a porch swing in heaven. They are both missed tremendously by all.

LaNel was preceded in death by her loving husband, Zack Shires. She is survived by children, Tammy Shires Willis and husband, Steve, and Darek Shires; grandchildren, Fallon Wirsing and husband, Sid, Dillon Atkinson and wife, Kolby, and Hayden and Holden Shires; great-grandchildren, Sidney and Beau Wirsing, and Myer and McCoy Atkinson; twin sister, Janel Thouvenel; sister, Loreta Massie; brother, Alton Thouvenel and wife, Judy; and a host of nieces and nephews.
