Hershell Scarbrough

  On November 29, 2008, Hershell Scarbrough went to be with his Lord. It was a day for rejoicing for the 88 years he spent on earth. His ongoing was from natural causes and was without pain and suffering. Hershell was born and lived much of his life in the Brock, Lazy Bend area. As a young man he joined the CCC’s and later the Navy to serve his country.  

  He married Leta Joy Woodruff also of Brock in 1942 and they had two children. Hershell spent 20 years with Gulf Oil and then 20 year with the railroad and retired from Texas Pacific Railroad in the 80’s and returned to Brock to the Farm he bought many years before. The rest of his life was spent “at the farm” in Lazy Bend within five miles of where he was born, where he was married and where his children were born. 

  Hershell was preceded in death by his parents, Martha and Earnest Scarbrough; his wife of 57 years, Joy Scarbrough; his sister, Geneva Nicholson; and his grandson, Michael Dale Johnston. 

  He was survived by his wife, Elva Scarbrough; his children, Calvin Scarbrough and Jo Lynn of Lufkin; his daughter, Donnie Kay Johnston and Mike of Corinth; his step son, Wayne Nash of Grandbury and his step daughter, Donna King and Jim of Weatherford. Hershell was “Brother” to Juanita Harrison, Oleta Bloodworth, Margaret Overton and husband, Karl, and Cecil Leon Scarbrough and wife, Shirley, all of Weatherford. 

  He was Paw Paw to Melissa and Jeff Klingberg of Keller and children, Bradley, Clayton and Kelly, Jamie, and Gigi Scarbrough and daughter, Catherine of Plano, Michelle and Mark Pittard and children, Micheal, Mavrick, and Major of Corinth, and Christy and Brian Corr and children, Isabella and Cooper of Allen, Jolee and Clay Tidwell and Shelby of Weatherford.

  As a proud member of the Masonic Lodge, for over 50 years, Hershell was a member of the Olive Branch Lodge in Brock who will be serving at the gravesite. 

  Hershell loved the outdoors and hunting and fishing and working the land.  

  He will be buried in the land he loved at Brock Cemetery. Services celebrating the life of this fine father, husband, brother, son, uncle, Pop, friend and neighbor will be at Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel on Monday, December 1, at 10:00 a.m. Visitation at Galbreaith Pickard will be Sunday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., or anytime “at the farm.”
