Charles D. (“Buddy”) Scoville, 88, died peacefully at home in Weatherford, Texas on June 20, 2026.

Charles was born at home in Weatherford, Texas, on March 22, 1938, as the second of five children of Henry “Mac” and Lydia Scoville. Early on, Charles picked up the nickname of “Buddy”, which was how most family and friends referred to him throughout his life.

The family soon moved to a farm in the rural community of Dicey, near present-day Lake Weatherford. Charles began school in the one-room Dicey School, and he attended Clear Fork Baptist Church. His summers were spent hauling hay for local farms. He graduated from Weatherford High School in 1956.

Soon after graduation, Charles found work in the aircraft industry, which initially took him around the country from the east coast to the west coast with stops in between. But with three children, he decided that it was important to raise them close to family. Family was very important to him, and he made it a priority throughout his life.

After returning to Weatherford in 1965, Charles began work at Bell Helicopter, where he remained until his retirement in 1998.

In 1988, Charles married Katey, and they became inseparable life partners. Together, they raised her three sons. They renovated several houses. They bought a farm and built a house. They had numerous travel adventures, and finally, they faced the challenges of Katey’s life-threatening double-lung transplant in 2020. Through all of it, it was obvious to all who knew them that they loved each other immensely and that they brought each other genuine joy.

Charles could overhaul a tractor, build a house, or build a fence that will be standing a hundred years from now. If he did it, he believed in doing it right. He was the man you could call if you had a problem with your car. You could describe the strange noise you were hearing to him, and he would talk you through the way to repair it over the phone.

After family, Charles loved Hank Williams, gospel bluegrass, Andy Griffith, playing dominoes, and doing things himself. He could never understand why you would hire someone to do something you could do yourself - and do it better.

Charles was a man who believed it was essential to do the right thing and to treat people with absolute honesty, no matter the cost to you. He also believed that a man should be your friend because of his character, not because of his status in the world.

Charles is survived by his beloved wife, Katey; his three children, Charles Allen Scoville and wife, Becca, Kathy Stelter and husband, Walt, and Teresa Edwards; and his stepsons, Chris and wife, Barbie, Michael, and Eric Grindstaff. He is also survived by his siblings, Shirley Dixon, Maxine Boyle, and Judy Blane, and by five grandchildren, Josh, Echo, Collin, Ramzey, and Bains.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
