Lena Mae Johnson died Wednesday morning, at the age of 94. She was born January 16, 1913, at McMinnville, Tennessee, to Frances Gamble Phifer and John Phifer. In 1937, Lena Mae married Pearson Madison Johnson, who preceded her in death in 1972.
She is survived by son, Donald Johnson of Weatherford; daughter, Carolyn and her husband, Lilburn Smith of Weatherford; stepdaughter, Clarice Camille of Fresno, California; and daughter-in-law, Doris Johnson of Bakersfield, California.
Other survivors are granddaughters, Stephanie Smith of Greenville, Texas, Barbara “Bea” Smith of Fort Worth, Texas, Dorothea Giardono of Amsterdam, New York, and Melissa Butterfield of Angleton, Texas; numerous step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and a nephew.
When her father died in 1919, Lena Mae and her siblings, Ray and Elizabeth traveled with their widowed mother to Hollis, Oklahoma, where they farmed near older sister, Jessie Argo. After their marriage, Lena Mae and Pearson lived in Dodson, Texas, and later moved to Bakersfield, California. In 1948, they moved to West Texas, and eventually settled in Lubbock. Lena Mae worked as a salesclerk at Sears for twenty-two years. She moved to Weatherford in 1989, where she has been a member of Central Christian Church.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, January 30, at 11:00 a.m., in Central Christian Church. Following cremation, burial will be in Lubbock.
In lieu of flowers, her family suggests donations to Central Christian Church for the building fund or for Freedom House.
