John Wesley Powell

December 5, 1938 — February 23, 2021

John Wesley Powell, 82 years old. Born on December 5, 1938, in Fort Worth, Texas, to parents Horace and Willie Mac Powell. He passed away on February 23, 2021 after his fight with cancer and heart disease. He was a dearly loved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend.

John retired in 1998, from the Fort Worth PD Marshal's office, after almost 25 years of service. Prior to the transfer to the Marshal's office, he was a Sgt. and the last Capt. of the Fort Worth Park Police and mounted patrol.

John also had a great love of music, particularly Gospel and Bluegrass. He played guitar from an early age, and inherited a beautiful singing voice from his father. All of the family and many others, have been blessed to hear John sing and play.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sandra Sue Powell, Children: Laura Anderson, Melissa and husband Kelly Sewell, Jim Powell and wife Lisa, John L. Powell, Eddie Holleman, Scotty Watson and wife Serena. Grandchildren: Amanda Fuller, TJ Harwell, Jon Anderson, Grey Powell, Katelynn Powell, Aaron Watson, Jeremy Powell, Kristopher Sewell, Devin Sewell, Nathan Sewell and Anthony Roy, Nathan Neal, Damien Neal and Christopher Sanborn. Great-grandchildren: Kensleigh and Jon Patrick Anderson, Ashlee Fuller, Cheyanne Fuller, Emmalee Fuller and Dominic Jaymes Harwell. Numerous loved cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Dear life-long friends: Raymond and Rose Dyer and the entire Dyer family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Cindy Powell Capehart, grandson Joseph Holleman, sisters Eileen Pettit and Mary Etta Breakiron.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, Saint Judes Children’s Hospital or a charity of your choosing.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
