Jewel Sammons

September 5, 1910 — November 13, 2008

Jewel Sammons, age 98, went to be with the Lord, on Thursday, November 13, 2008. Jewel was born in Carbon, Texas on September 5, 1910, to Oliver Harris Brown and Abby Catherine Belknap. She was one of eighteen children raised on a farm north of Cisco, Texas. After graduating from Cisco High School with honors she moved to Fort Worth where she became a member of the Church of Christ and went to work for Colonial Bakery. Her work eventually led her to move to San Antonio where she married John Sammons in 1937.  This union produced two sons who were raised in the Palm Heights section of San Antonio. During these years she was active with the Palm Heights Church of Christ and served as president of the PTA at Charles Graebner Elementary School. As the children grew older she entered the work force and eventually went to work for San Antonio Savings and Loan. When it became apparent that the functioning of the company would depend on computers she attended night classes at San Antonio Junior College which enabled her to pioneer in changing their entire system to computers. After retiring from SASL she moved to Weatherford, Texas where she became a member of the South Main Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by sixteen of her brothers and sisters and her husband. She is survived by her two sons, Dexter and his wife Bonnie of Weatherford, Texas, and Edward and his wife Marilyn of Tampa, Florida, five granddaughters and one grandson, and fifteen great grandchildren. One of her greatest joys was to travel throughout the state and the nation to visit the many relatives that are a part of such a large family. She will be dearly missed by all. Funeral service will be held at 10 AM, Tuesday, November 18, 2008 in the Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel.  Graveside and interment will be at 10 AM, Wednesday, November 19, 2008 in Mission Park South Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.  Visitation will be 6-8 PM, Monday, November 17, at the funeral home.
