Helene M Garen

Helene Garen, 95, of Weatherford, passed away Friday September 25, 2009 in a local nursing facility. Helene was born June 11, 1914 in Leavenworth, KS to Theodore and Willie Mae Lalumiere. During World War II, she worked at Nola Weather Bureau as a forecaster.  Before moving to Weatherford in 1966, Helene lived in New Orleans, San Antonio, and Mexico City. While in Louisiana, she designed ladies clothing for her shop in the French Quarter. Once in Weatherford, she became a member of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church and in 1977 became a Diocesan lay minister, and in 1983 a minister of Catechesis. Helene volunteered at the hospital, Senior Center, and at church and local schools to assist with English as a second language, helping several people gain their citizenship. She is preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Garen, and grandson, Jim Bowens. Survivors include her daughter Toni Posey of Weatherford, son, Mike Garen and wife Ellen of Florida, grandchildren; Denis Wallace, Debra Jordan, Rebecca Staggs, Ted Bowens, Susan Asciutto, and Cindy Freed, 20 great grandchildren, and 17 great great grandchildren. Funeral Mass: 1:00 PM, Monday at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, interment will follow in Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Rosary: 7:00 PM, Sunday in the Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel.
