Drusilla Dare Sallee

August 27, 1914 — May 2, 2009

Drusilla Dare Morgan was born to John and Winifred Morgan in Bartlesville, Oklahoma on August 27, 1914. She died peacefully at her Weatherford home on May 2, 2009. Before her marriage to John William (Jack) Sallee in 1940 she represented Kansas in the Miss America contest of 1933. Jack and Dru then spent most of their life together in Texas, where their children, Bill and Sylvia, were born. Jack preceded her in death in 1986. Also preceding her in death was her brother, Perry in 1955 and his wife, Jennie in 1977 and her nephew, Jim Morgan in 2008. Survivors are her brother, Glenn Morgan and wife, Mertie, of Weatherford, her son, Bill Sallee and wife, Kittie of Weatherford, her daughter, Sylvia Sallee Wood and husband, Clark of Austin and her two grandsons, Troy Wood of Austin and Eric Wood and wife, Jennifer of Weatherford. Dru is also survived by her niece, Susan Kay Morgan McMullen, her nephews, John Morgan and Tom Morgan and several cousins. Jack and Dru began traveling to Weatherford in the early 1950’s so the kids could have a place to ride horses and run free. Dru loved the area and purchased many acres of beautiful ranch land, much of which remains in her family today. Her niece, Susan Kay has fond memories of summer fun at Aunt Dru’s ranch where she and her brothers, John and Jim, found joy and adventure after the untimely death of their dad, Perry. Dru always had a special place in her heart for all kinds of animals. Her brother, Glenn has many a story about the dogs his sister rescued so they could live with him. Dru’s love for animals became even more evident when she was instrumental in the establishment of Weatherford’s first animal shelter. Dru will be dearly missed by her family and by her long time friends, Marge Becker, Mary Ratts and Juan and Anita Trejo. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Southern Care of Fort Worth Hospice, Professional Home Care Providers of Weatherford and Dr. Michael Bailey of Weatherford. A private family memorial service will celebrate Dru’s life. Those wishing to honor her memory are asked to make contributions to the Weatherford Animal Shelter, 403 Hickory Lane, Weatherford, TX 76086 or Southern Care of Fort Worth Hospice, 3550 Hulen Street # B, Fort Worth, TX 76107.
