Charles Pope Sullivan, 92, passed away Wednesday, June 27, 2018, in Weatherford.

Celebration of life: 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20, 2018 in the sanctuary of North Side Baptist Church. August 20th was declared “Charlie Sullivan Day” in Weatherford on Aug. 20, 2017.

Memorials: In lieu of usual remembrances, the Sullivan family suggests contributions in Charlie’s memory to the Weatherford College Booster Club.

Charles Pope Sullivan, the third of four children, was born Aug. 20, 1925, in Hardeman County, son of the late Carl and Anna Sullivan. In 1956, he was elected Mayor of Weatherford. While in the role, he, along with a two-man city council, finished the building of Lake Weatherford, the building of the Brazos Electric Power Plant on Lake Weatherford, Water and Sewer Treatment Plants, the purchase of a new 750 G.P.M Fire Engine, hired additional police and firemen, and negotiated a contract with Brazos Power that provided low cost power to Weatherford’s residents for the next 50 years. Charles also served as president of Kiwanis Club, was active with the committee on aging, Meals On Wheels, and little league baseball and was a member and head deacon of Eureka Baptist Church. When he was younger, he assisted his parents in the operation of the Sullivan Grocery Store that was located on South Main Street.

Charlie was preceded in death by his wife, Nelda Myrle Bishop Sullivan; his parents, Carl Emmerson and Anna Mae Manwarring Sullivan; and three sisters, Jimmye Nell Sullivan Dwyer, Marybecca Sullivan Tilotta Holbrook and Gloria Anita Sullivan Whitley and son James Lee Sullivan.

Survivors include his sons, John C. Sullivan Sr. of Irving, Charles Robert “Bob” Sullivan and wife, Tracy, of Arizona, James David Sullivan of Weatherford, John C. Sullivan Jr. of Dallas, Charles H. Sullivan of Weatherford, and Anthony A. Sullivan and wife, Julie, of Mesquite; daughter-in-law, Sabrina Penny of Graham; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of other loving family and friends.
